Charities

The Tidewaves have chosen to support three initiatives close to their hearts alongside their Atlantic Challenge campaign.

Whilst raising funds for the crossing itself, The Tidewaves will simultaneously raise money to London Youth Rowing, Access Sport and SportsAid Scotland.

The Tidewaves also aim to raise awareness and dedicate time and voluntary efforts to both these charities.

  • London Youth Rowing (LYR) is a ground breaking sports initiative - developing young people through physical activity and opening access to rowing at all levels.

LYR is an inclusive programme for young people of all abilities, social, ethnic and economic backgrounds. LYR operates across London delivering innovative programmes, training and evaluation for schools, youth clubs and community groups.

  • Access Sport is a national charity formed in 2004. Their vision is that no one should be excluded from the transformational benefits of community sport, which, for them, focus on physical and mental health and well-being; personal development including life skills and prospects; sense of belonging and community engagement.

Their mission is to make inclusion the norm in community sport by tackling the access barriers faced by disadvantaged and disabled children and young people, focussing on the causes of exclusion, not just the symptoms.

  • SportsAid Scorland is a charity that provides financial assistance in the form of grant awards to talented sporting youngsters in the 12 to 22 year age range and to disability athletes of any age who are already competing at national level in their age group and have the potential to represent Scotland at senior level. The finance given is to help the athletes with their travel and training costs, and will hopefully assist them in becoming Scotland's future sporting stars.

Access Sport, London Youth Rowing, SportsAid Scotland are phenomenal charities who make immeasurable difference to young people's lives.

Sport offers young people:

  • Physical and mental health and well-being

  • Personal development, including life skills and prospects.

  • Sense of belonging

  • Community engagement.

All three of The Tidewaves have experienced the benefits of sport: learning the link between dedicated training and results and enjoying the inter-dependence and close bond of being part of a team.

More awareness must be raised of the life-changing impact that sports can have on both the individual and the wider community.

Now more than ever young people need support, and sporting opportunity is one of the greatest things to give.
